"Remember the name Elana Stone. It shouldn't be hard, as you're likely to hear much more of it. She is that rarest of endangered species, a real jazz singer"
John Shand - jazz critic for the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
Elana is a Sydney based vocalist who completed her Bachelor of Music, Jazz Major in 2002 and is currently making waves on the Australian jazz scene. Her sense of humor and her spirit make Elana a magnetic performer and an ideal band leader.
Elana studied Composition briefly at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music before moving down to Canberra to complete her Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz voice at the Australian National University, School of Music.
Elana is now ‘Sydney’s favourite young jazz singer’ [Barry Morris, Daily Telegraph] and is doing gigs with artists she never expected to be performing alongside. She has had the great fortune to sing at many wonderful venues around Sydney with such luminaries as James Muller, Mark Isaacs, Sean Wayland, Dan Barnett, Jackie Orszaczky, Rai Thistlethwaite (Thirsty Merc), Phil Stack (Thirsty Merc), Phil Slater, Carl Dewhurst, Brett Hirst and Simon Barker just to mention a few. She is also a featured guest vocalist with the sensational Melbourne based band the Cat Empire.
Elana won Best Jazz Artist in the Musicoz Competition (1 Dec 2004) and was selected to perform at the awards night with her band in a line up that included Australian rock acts Regurgitator and Jebidiah. In 2005 Elana won the Ozmusic Jazz Singer of the Year title, and took out first place at Australia’s most prestigious jazz instrumental competition, the National Jazz Awards, which featured vocalists for the first time since 1998.
Also in 2005 Elana released her debut album which is predominantly comprised of her own original material performed by her group ‘The Elana Stone Quintet’. The band is made up of jazz musicians with a real mixed bag of influences including rock, soul, pop and world music.
The Elana Stone Quintet has performed at a variety of exciting venues including the Winebanc, the Basement, the Surry Hills Excelsior Jazzgroove night, Wangaratta Jazz Festival, the Side-On Café, the Hunter Valley Jazz Festival, the Tilbury Hotel, Candy's Apartment, the Hyde Park Bar and the Vanguard.
